Here are a few memories of Summer Camp 2011 Blog!
Thursday, June 30th (posted by Lisa Bass at 11:00 PM)
There were a several parent visitors to the Apache Campsite this evening. The fresh fruit was greatly appreciated and quickly devoured!
Everyone walked down to the Parade Field for a Camp Picnic! Boy Scouts wearing t-shirts to indicate their Troops (42, Texas, South Carolina, VA Beach and more) were participating in tug-a-war, beach volleyball, football, frisbee and slip & slide. The outdoor meal was a cook-out featuring hot dogs, hamburger, baked beans, chips and a cookie.
Troop 42 has noticed a few changes to the Camp experience this year: no more "bug juice" aka kool-aid and PB&J snack bar to encourage healthier eating and/or reduced camp expenses.
A water carnival was offered for any teams of 4 Scouts, but our Troop 42 Boys are very tired. While several Scouts decided to enjoy the open shotgun, rifle and archery ranges as wel as the zipline, the majority decided to return to Apache Campsite for an after-dinner rest. The leaders are quite weary as well.
During this time, it was discovered that one Scout had yet to take a single shower the entire week. That situation was corrected along with his belief that swimming in Lake Ottari constituted as a "bath".
Scout Birthday Celebration Today: Eddie Sheffield
Casulity Report: Two mice who failed to recognize Wednesday night's quiet/sleep hours in the Leaders' adirondack cabin
The evening ended with a campsite campfire, Knost appetizers (meats, cheeses, & crackers) and warm peach cobbler served with vanilla ice cream. A lot of Scouts were heading to their cots by 10:15 AM.
Many Scouts remarked how much fun they have had at Camp Ottari but they are so looking forward to coming home very soon to soft beds, warm showers, home-cooking (or junk) food and missed family members!
Wednesday, June 29th (posted by Lisa Bass after lunchtime visit)
Met with BSI Scouts who were eating corndogs, peaches, mac & cheese, carrots and chocolate chip cake. They felt they were not just "surviving but thriving!" The boys introduced their BSI counsleor from the Dominican Republic. They were ready for the 5-mile hike!
With the BSI Scouts gone, there was room for adults to sit inside for lunch, but still a squeeze to get in. After a dining hall game of "hide & go seek" using "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" with camp staff, there were several annoucement regardings CPR training for any water-related MBs that afternoon, along with Scoutmaster training before a special Scoutmaster Dinner.
From talking to Troop 42 Scouts, here are tidbits of information:
Missing soccer ball was recovered this AM by Troop 42 Canoe MB Scout.
There has been some squabbling (expected in a large camping group) but a good speech by ASPL on Tuesday night seems to have helped!
Many are very tired even though they are sleeping well.
Rest assured parents, many of your sons are taking showers. Mr. Brumfield announced a "sniff test" tonight for all the shower hold-outs.
ASPL has offered physical, mental and gamble-type challenges to help provide a fair share in the duty roster.

Scouts greatly enjoy their free time. One annoymous Scout stated: "With free time, you don't have your parents telling you do chores." Most Scouts will be paticipating in the Frog Hike at 8:30 PM.
Only a few Wilderness Survival MB Scouts will be overnight camping tonight.
There have been many practical jokes within our Troop while other Troops have had a some Boy Scouts not demonstrating the Scout Oath/Law. (expected in a camp with over 400 campers)
If visit, please bring fresh fruit. They are becoming tired of canned-fruit. My supply of bananas were eaten by the BSI Scouts.
If bring any snacks, please bring enough to share so as to reduce jealousy or stealing.
Asst. Scoutmaster Matt Knost finished his business trip early and will be arrive today after 3:00 PM to substitute for Henry Bass. THANKS! Parent volunteers/visitors are still welcomed.

Troop 42 did participate in the Tuesday night campfire and performed the "If I weren't a Boy Scout" skit.
Tuesday Injury Report: a few bandaids on battered fingers and 1 brused leg
Casuality Report: a favorite soccer ball was accidently kicked into the lake and mysterously sank just before the Tuesday night campfire.
Today, everyone was eager to head off to their Merit Badge Sessions because they are really enjoying their selections.
BSI Scouts will be eating an early lunch at 11:30 AM then heading off on a 5-mile hike.
Tuesday, June 28th (posted by Lisa Bass with info. shared from Henry Bass as he was leaving town)
Tuesday and Thursday have been designated, by the Troop, as Class-B Days. The entire troop looked quite snazzy in these newly designed t-shirts.
There is a new Troop challenge at meal time, now - besides eating healthy - it is carton/cup stacking! Check it out in this photo!

All is well after the brief thunderstorm last night at 2:30ish AM. Every Scout and their gear are dry. There was one scared Scout during the strom but the troop was very supportive and the Scout was still sleeping soundly at 7:15 AM. The camp is taking precautions for this afternoon's forecast of severe thunderstorms.
The Fishing MBs were up early for their 7:00 AM session. Two Scouts learned that a 6:30 AM wake-up gets you all the hot water you want in the shower house. Everyone - despite the groggy appearances - were looking forward to a new day of skills and fun!
Purpose of such an early visit this AM was to sadly inform Mr. Henry Bass of the death of this grandmother last night. Henry must now leave camp to travel to Texas this afternoon. If there are any adults (espeically male) with available time, please consider spending 4-6 hours at Camp Ottari. There will now only be 4 adults to help 27 boys during the day with 1 of those adult leaders managing the transportation of Scouts on crutches. Boys usually need help with clock reminders to get to next session, supervision while hanging out at Apache Campsite, using the buddy system, etc. Call 320-1591 if questions.
Mr. Bobby Burelson will substitute for Henry and try to submit blog updates today and during the rest of the week.
Monday, June 27th (posting by Henry, 10pm) - The boys had their first day of Merit Badge classes! Typical 1st day material is safety and first aid related to the particular subject. Our Brownsea Island boys wound up all in 1 patrol. They picked their patrol name, and it's...the Flaming Ninjas. You probably guessed that already, though.
Dinner was salsibury steak with cheesy rice, salad (most boys rejected it), corn bread and yellow cake. Our photo below shows 3 Troop 42 tables in a row, in the dining hall with about 400 campers at once.
Evening activities included open archery, rifle (Alexis showed us a bulls-eye from the .22 range), open waterfront, and a snake show.
We wrapped up the evening in our campsite. Jack made oatmeal raisin cookies, and Gary worked with Eric to make a dutch-oven apple cobbler.
Injury Report: one cut thumb, bandaid cured it.
Campsite Report: We scored a 100% during the comissioner's inspection. A week-long average of 95 gets us the "hound's tooth" patch.
Schedule: Tomorrow is a chance of rain. We have the Comissioner's Campfire in the evening where skits will be performed.

Troop 42 Boy Scouts were too excited to observe the 11:00 PM lights out on Sunday night! After today's activities, that won't be a problem because they will be exhausted!
After a tour of camp yesterday evening and a chilly swim test, boys were treated to their first camp dinner - chicken cordon bleu with mashed potatos, mixed vegetables, salad and spiced cake. Camp staff were introduced at the evening campfire.
This AM, everyone was physched about attending BSI and their Merit Badge sessions. Horsemanship is actually at Camp Powhatan so transportation had to be coordinated with other participants. Thanks to a Troop 67 from South Carolina for the ride-sharing!
Injury Report: 1 ace-bandage applied to calf-muscle and ankle; Scout was cured after 2-hours
Sunday, June 26th (posted by Lisa Bass)
26 Boy Scouts and 5 Troops Leaders were transported in 10 vehicles to Camp Ottari today. They departed Trinity Baptist Church after patrols gathered, selected/confirmed their patrol leaders and a prayer to start the journey.
Upon arrival, the Troop was met by a Camp Staff member who instructed everyone to to grab their gear, change into bathing suit, gather for a camp tour and head to the lake for the swim test.
The Boy Scout of Troop 42 looked ready for an adventurous week!
